Kunming Medical University is a provincial key university. Its predecessor was the Department of Medicine of Donglu University founded in 1933. It was established as an independent institute in 1956. It became the first batch of master's degree-granting units in 1981. It became a doctoral degree-granting unit in 1998 and 2010. Yunnan Medical College was merged into Kunming Medical University in 2012. It is one of the first batch of universities in the central and western regions of China for basic capacity building engineering colleges. Over the past 85 years, more than 100,000 senior medical talents trained have taken root in the frontier and served the grassroots, making outstanding contributions to Yunnan's medical and health undertakings, economic and social development, national unity and progress, and border prosperity and stability.

　　 The school has three campuses: Chenggong (main campus), Renmin West Road, and Pingzheng. The campus covers an area of more than 1,600 acres. There are 6366 faculty members (1591 in the school headquarters and 4,775 in the directly affiliated hospital). "Journal of Kunming Medical University" is a national core journal of science and technology.

The school has established a complete practice teaching network consisting of 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 12 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 11 teaching hospitals, 43 practice hospitals, 21 community practice teaching bases and 77 related professional practice teaching bases.
